Our Craft

Wood chosen for strength, joinery built to endure

Every gazebo and furniture piece begins as raw maple timber, seasoned and inspected by hand. We favour heavy, solid-section construction over thin veneers, so each structure carries real weight and real permanence into your garden.

Every joint cut and fitted by hand

Our woodworkers select each board for grain direction and density before a single cut is made. The result is furniture and structures that flex with weather rather than crack against it.

  • Timber is seasoned for a minimum of twelve months in open-air storage, allowing internal moisture to stabilise before any cutting begins.
  • Boards are grain-matched panel by panel so tabletops and frame faces read as one continuous surface rather than mismatched pieces.
  • Every visible surface is hand-sanded through five progressively finer grits before the first coat of oil is applied.
Our Range

Gazebos and garden furniture

The four pieces below cover our most requested sizes and formats — every one can also be adapted to your garden's exact dimensions.

Hexagon Maple Gazebo

A six-sided pavilion frame in solid maple, mortise-jointed at every rafter and post for structural rigidity without steel brackets. The cedar-shingled roof sheds rain and snow cleanly, while open sides keep the structure light and airy. Comfortably seats six to eight around a central table or bench ring, and can be closed with optional screen panels.

Heritage Garden Bench

A wide, heavy-frame bench built from full-dimension solid maple rather than thin slats, with thick, gently curved armrests shaped for comfort. The seat and back are through-jointed to the frame for a bench that won't loosen or wobble with years of outdoor use. Seats two comfortably, three at a squeeze, and pairs well with any of our dining or lounging sets.

Maple Dining Set, Six Seats

A thick-top dining table paired with six matching chairs, all cut from solid maple and finished to the same natural oil standard as our gazebos. The tabletop is grain-matched across its full width so the surface reads as one continuous board rather than glued strips. Built for daily outdoor dining through sun, rain, and winter storage alike.

Garden Pergola Arbor

A freestanding maple pergola frame engineered to carry the eventual weight of mature wisteria, grape, or climbing rose without sagging over time. Beam spacing is set generously to filter rather than block afternoon light, and the frame can be extended along a walkway on request. Finished with the same weatherproof oil treatment as the rest of our range.

Why Maple Sky Works

Built the way garden structures should be built

Four decisions run through every commission we take on, from a single bench to a full pavilion.

Solid maple timber

No laminates, veneers, or particleboard find their way into our frames — every beam, post, and slat begins as a solid, kiln-dried maple board. We hand-select each length for straight grain and density before it ever reaches a saw, rejecting anything with hidden checks or soft spots.

Heavy-frame gazebos

Our gazebo frames are cut to full structural dimension rather than undersized for shipping convenience, then joined with mortise-and-tenon connections that lock solidly under load. Each frame is engineered to carry snow load and resist racking through decades of wind and seasonal movement.

Hand joinery

Every joint is cut by chisel and mallet, fitted dry, then reinforced with hidden hardwood dowels rather than exposed metal brackets that rust and loosen over time. This traditional approach lets the wood expand and contract naturally without stressing the joint.

Weatherproof finishing

We apply a multi-coat natural oil finish that penetrates the grain rather than sitting on the surface like paint or lacquer. The finish sheds rain, resists UV greying, and can be refreshed by hand rather than stripped and reapplied.

What We Build

From a single bench to a full garden pavilion

Our workshop covers the full range of outdoor wood structures, sized and finished to match the scale of your garden.

  • 01

    Maple garden gazebos and pavilions

Hexagonal, square, or custom-framed pavilions sized from an intimate two-person retreat to a ten-guest garden room. Each roof is shingled or tiled to match your home, with optional screen panels for insect protection.

  • 02

Heavy dining sets, benches, and lounging furniture

Thick-top tables, wide benches, and deep lounge chairs built from full-dimension maple stock rather than thin slats. Every piece is rated for daily outdoor use and finished to resist moisture swelling.

  • 03

    Pergolas, arbors, and climbing-vine structures

Freestanding or wall-mounted frames engineered to carry the weight of mature wisteria, grape, or climbing rose without sagging. Beam spacing is adjusted to your planting choice and the shade coverage you want.

  • 04

Custom commissions built to your garden's dimensions

Irregular plots, sloped terraces, and rooftop gardens are common requests we design around rather than turn away. Our design team visits site before drafting so the final structure fits its footprint precisely.

Built To Last

What solid maple gives your garden

Softwood and composite alternatives look similar in a showroom, but the difference shows within the first hard winter. Here is what choosing solid maple actually changes.

01

Structural weight

Solid, full-dimension sections resist warping, twisting, and shifting far better than hollow-core or laminated frames, especially under snow load or strong wind. The extra mass also means less vibration and creak underfoot on gazebo floors.

02

Natural grain beauty

Maple's fine, even grain takes an oil finish evenly and ages into a warm, honeyed patina rather than fading in blotches like painted softwood. No two pieces are identical, but each shares the same calm, consistent figure.

03

Repairable by design

Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery means an individual post, slat, or rail can be replaced or re-glued without rebuilding the whole structure. We keep records of every commission so replacement parts match the original cut.

04

Ages gracefully outdoors

Maple weathers to a deeper honey tone rather than greying unevenly like softwoods, so structures look more established with each passing year rather than tired.

Client Voices

Trusted by gardens across the city

A selection of feedback from homeowners and garden designers who have lived with their maple structures for several seasons.

"The gazebo frame is genuinely heavy — you can feel the difference the moment you touch the posts. Five years on, it still looks freshly built."

R. Tanaka
Homeowner, Setagaya

"Our dining set has hosted every family gathering for three summers straight, rain or sun, with no cracking or warping."

M. Kobayashi
Homeowner, Meguro

"They walked us through every joint before assembly. The craftsmanship is on a different level from the imported kits we compared."

Our Process

From consultation to installation

A typical commission moves through four stages, each one a checkpoint where you can adjust the design before we commit timber to it.

01

Consultation

We visit your garden in person to measure the space, check sun and wind exposure, and understand how you plan to use the finished structure. This on-site visit also lets us flag any ground levelling or drainage work needed before installation.

02

Design

Our design team drafts scaled plans for your gazebo or furniture layout, matched to your garden's proportions, sightlines, and existing planting. You review dimensions, roof style, and finish options before anything is cut.

03

Woodworking

Selected maple timber moves into our workshop, where it is cut, chiselled, and joined entirely by hand over several weeks depending on scale. Every joint is test-fitted dry before final assembly and finishing.

04

Installation

We deliver the finished structure or furniture directly to your garden and assemble it on site, levelling footings and securing every post for long-term stability. A final walkthrough covers care and maintenance before we leave.

Furniture with the weight and warmth of real timber

Thick tabletops, wide armrests, and substantial legs give our furniture a grounded presence outdoors — pieces that feel as good to touch as they look in a garden setting. Every joint is through-fitted rather than screwed from underneath, so nothing loosens after a season of daily use.

Case Study

A rooftop garden gazebo in Shibuya

A tight, wind-exposed rooftop plot pushed our joinery and bracing further than a ground-level garden ever would.

"We needed a gazebo light enough for a rooftop but solid enough to withstand coastal wind. Maple Sky Works engineered a reinforced maple frame that has stood through three typhoon seasons without a single loose joint."

The client's rooftop terrace offered no shelter from wind funnelling between neighbouring buildings, so our design team specified deeper corner bracing and shorter roof overhangs than a standard hexagon gazebo would use. Footings were anchored to the existing rooftop deck rather than set in soil, a detail we worked through with the building's structural engineer before cutting any timber.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers to what clients most often ask before committing to a custom gazebo or furniture set.

How long does a custom gazebo take to build?

Most gazebos take eight to twelve weeks from final design approval, depending on size, roof style, and the season's timber availability. Larger pavilions or commissions with non-standard dimensions can take longer, which we'll confirm during your design consultation.

Do you deliver and install outside Tokyo?

Yes, we deliver and install nationwide, though most of our current commissions are concentrated in the greater Tokyo area. Travel and installation costs are quoted separately based on distance and site access.

What maintenance does solid maple furniture need?

We recommend re-oiling every twelve to eighteen months to maintain the weatherproof finish and grain colour, a task most clients manage themselves with the products we supply. Structural joints rarely need attention beyond an annual visual check for movement.

Can I request custom dimensions?

Every gazebo and furniture set can be adapted to your garden's exact dimensions during the design consultation, including non-standard footprints and sloped sites. There is no minimum order size for custom commissions.

What happens if a piece is damaged?

Because every joint is mechanical rather than glued end-to-end, individual components can usually be repaired or replaced without remaking the entire piece. Contact us with photos and we'll advise on repair versus replacement.

Can you match an existing garden style?

We regularly design gazebos and furniture to complement an existing garden's material palette, whether that's stone paving, brick, or an established planting scheme. Bring photos to your consultation and we'll factor them into the design.
